✈️Proposed AD for CFM International LEAP Engines - Compliance Impact

The FAA proposes to supersede Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2018-19-16, which applies to all CFM International, S.A. (CFM) Model LEAP-1A23, -1A24, -1A24E1, -1A26, -1A26E1, -1A26CJ, -1A29, -1A29CJ, - 1A30, -1A32, -1A33, -1A33B2, and -1A35A engines with certain full authority digital engine control (FADEC) and prognostic health monitoring (PHM) software installed. AD 2018-19-16 requires removing certain FADEC and PHM software and installing versions eligible for installation. Since the FAA issued AD 2018-19-16, the manufacturer has developed a new pressure subsystem (PSS) with a heater element to evaporate potential moisture on the PSS manifold/transducer interface and prevent freezing at low temperature. This proposed AD would require replacing certain FADEC and PHM software with new versions that are eligible for installation, replacement of certain harnesses with newly designed harnesses, and replacement of the PSS with a newly designed heated PSS. The FAA is proposing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

✈️Special Conditions for CFM LEAP Engines with Composite Blades

This action amends Special Condition No. 33-015-SC for the CFM International (CFM) Model LEAP-1A and LEAP-1C engines. These engines have a novel or unusual design feature associated with the engine fan blades--incorporation of woven composite fan blades. The applicable airworthiness regulations do not contain adequate or appropriate safety standards for this design feature. These special conditions, as amended, contain the additional safety standards that the Administrator considers necessary to establish a level of safety equivalent to that established by the existing airworthiness standards.

✈️FAA Airworthiness Directive for CFM International Engines Compliance

The FAA is superseding Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2023-09- 06, which applied to all CFM International, S.A. Model (CFM) LEAP-1A23, LEAP-1A24, LEAP-1A24E1, LEAP-1A26, LEAP-1A26CJ, LEAP-1A26E1, LEAP-1A29, LEAP-1A29CJ, LEAP-1A30, LEAP-1A32, LEAP-1A33, LEAP-1A33B2, and LEAP- 1A35A (LEAP-1A) engines. AD 2023-09-06 required replacement of certain high-pressure turbine (HPT) rotor stage 1 disks (HPT stage 1 disks), forward outer seals, and compressor rotor stages 6-10 spools. AD 2023- 09-06 also prohibited installation of an HPT stage 1 disk, forward outer seal, or compressor rotor stages 6-10 spool that has a part number and serial number identified in the service information onto any engine. Since the FAA issued AD 2023-09-06, the manufacturer identified additional affected parts that were manufactured from material suspected to have reduced material properties due to iron inclusion, which prompted this AD. This AD retains the requirements to replace certain HPT stage 1 disks, forward outer seals, and compressor rotor stages 6-10 spools and expands the applicability to include additional affected parts manufactured from the same material suspected to have reduced material properties due to iron inclusion. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

✈️New Airworthiness Directive for CFM Engines by FAA

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain CFM International, S.A. (CFM) Model LEAP-1A and LEAP-1C engines. This AD was prompted by an investigation of an in-flight shut down event that revealed the aft arm of the high-pressure turbine (HPT) rotor interstage seal had failed. This AD requires removal from service and replacement of the HPT rotor interstage seal for LEAP-1A engines. Since the HPT rotor interstage seal part number is interchangeable between LEAP-1A and LEAP-1C engines, this AD also prohibits installation of these affected parts onto any LEAP-1A or LEAP-1C engine. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.
